Legal support helped father of 5 regain his independence after road accident

Martin, a father of five, was collecting his son from school on a Friday afternoon when a car mounted the pavement and struck him. The accident left him with two torn ligaments in his knee, turning an ordinary school run into an experience that would affect his ability to work, care for his children and support his family.

Before the accident, Martin had been able to manage the everyday demands of family life. Suddenly, even simple activities became difficult. He could no longer drive, walk to the shops or play with his children as he had before.

One of the hardest adjustments was being unable to care for his young daughter in the way he was used to. Kneeling down to bathe her, something he had previously done without a second thought, was now impossible.

Martin explained: “It's a struggle. It really is a struggle having something that's so basic to your needs then taken away, even for just a short period of time.”

The consequences extended beyond his physical injuries. Unable to work for several weeks, Martin faced mounting financial pressures while his household expenses continued. He struggled to keep up with his bills and eventually had to take his car off the road.

With his income affected and his independence limited, Martin became increasingly reliant on his partner to help manage family life. What had started as a painful knee injury was now affecting almost every aspect of his daily routine.

Martin turned to National Accident Helpline, part of Consumer Legal Association (CLA) member NAHL Group, for advice.

After listening to his circumstances and discussing the accident, National Accident Helpline helped put Martin in touch with a specialist personal injury solicitor who could pursue a compensation claim on his behalf.

Throughout the claims process, Martin valued having someone who understood his circumstances, explained the legal process and kept him informed about what was happening.

Reflecting on the support he received, he said: “They were completely professional in their approach. When I spoke to them, they were attentive to my needs, and they explained everything throughout.”

For Martin, the claim offered an opportunity to recover some of the financial losses caused by the accident and begin restoring the independence he had lost.

When his compensation was paid, he was able to bring his rent payments up to date and get his car back on the road. These were practical changes that made a considerable difference to his family after weeks of financial uncertainty.

Martin described the relief of receiving his compensation as a weight being lifted from his shoulders.

“Every bill that you pay off with that compensation when it comes through is just a reminder that the system works,” he said.

Although the compensation could not undo the injury or the difficulties his family had experienced, it helped Martin regain financial stability and move forward with greater confidence.

For Martin, access to specialist legal support meant being able to address the wider consequences of an accident that had disrupted his family life. With the right advice and representation, he was able to regain some of his independence and focus on getting life back on track.
