The Consumer Legal Association (CLA) is a not-for-profit trade body for the claimant industry, with full members including leading law firms, legal expenses insurers, medical reporting agencies and other associated businesses.

Companies with a small turnover or other organisations such as barristers’ chambers, charities, consumer groups and other membership bodies can also apply to be associate members.

CLA membership types

Full members

Most members are companies who sit on our working groups, participate in stakeholder and political engagement and benefit directly from our pooling of resources on research projects, consultation and inquiry responses and more.

Subsidiary or sister companies of full members can also be admitted to CLA membership on a case-by-case basis and typically pay no additional charge beyond the subscription paid by the parent company.

Associate members

Associate membership is available to firms with smaller turnovers on an exceptional basis, as well as to charities, not-for-profits or other consumer bodies and trade/membership bodies representing the wider industry.

An associate member will not typically play an active role in shaping the CLA’s core activities but will benefit from them. Fees are decided on a case-by-case basis but with charities not contributing financially unless otherwise agreed.

Membership benefits

As a CLA member, you’re part of a collective that actively shapes the direction of the claimant sector.

By working with us on policy development you directly contribute to our approach, priorities and objectives.

You have access to and the ability to influence every major industry stakeholder on day-to-day and longer-term thematic matters before policy has been decided.

You help ensure that politicians, policymakers and regulators hear the voice of the claimant industry.

We gather your views and then respond on your behalf to all relevant consultations and inquiries, producing a more compelling message on behalf of the whole industry.

By working together we are able to commission more and better research that helps improve our understanding of consumer attitudes to our industry and the positive impact it has on society and the economy as well as individual claimants.

By engaging positively with trade and national media and providing issues management we articulate the benefits of what our industry does and inform the broader debate, as well as providing support to individual members.

We give you access to industry and bespoke insights, including trend analysis and the latest government and stakeholder data and reports.

You are invited to events including cross-industry discussions, working group meetings and select social gatherings where we bring senior people together from our membership.

You feature in our communications, on our website and have access to our membership area, which contains a range of reports and information.

By signing up to the CLA Standards, you contribute to defining the behaviours expected of those who support claimants.
